A Prayer for April
For thus says the LORD: “Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the nations like an overflowing stream; and you shall nurse, you shall be carried upon her hip, and bounced upon her knees. As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem. You shall see, and your heart shall rejoice; your bones shall flourish like the grass; and the hand of the Lord shall be known to his servants, and he shall show his indignation against his enemies."
Isaiah 66:12-14
O God, what peace to know that you wrap your arms around us with such comforting promises! How soothing to know that you nurture us tenderly like a loving mother. We need your comfort today and the flourishing that it brings. But we do not deserve these blessings. Had it not been for your kindness in Jesus, we would stand before you as your enemies, facing your justice for our own rebellion. But Jesus took our punishment so that we can joyfully receive what these verses promise: a river of peace, transformed communities, your comforting love, true sight, deep joy, miraculous flourishing, tender guidance and perfect justice. Would you give us confidence in these promises even as we wait for the full experience of them in your presence someday? Until then, may your Spirit strengthen our courage and unite our hearts together in grateful praise to you for your comforting promises.
Father, we long for everyone in this broken world to be comforted and nurtured like this! Please empower your people around the world to take this joyful news to those who are so often shunned and overlooked. May the Body of Christ come gently and patiently alongside those with disabilities with a tenderness that reflects your comforting love and generous heart. We long for them to flourish and join in the mission of making your love known to the world. Lord, all of us who bear your image and enjoy your promises long for the day when we will gather together around your throne rejoicing in all you have done for us. Come, Lord Jesus!
