People rarely understand what life is like for someone living with a disability until they have walked in that person’s shoes.

Desserts in the Dark is an opportunity to do that.

Desserts in the Dark is an Awareness Event that provides an opportunity to discover what living with blindness is like through the witness of a personal story and a guided simulation experience. It’s a chance to step outside your own perspective, confront your assumptions, and learn directly from the resilience of someone who lives with blindness. As the host, you can invite and gather a group of friends, provide sweet treats & drinks, and participate together in a simulated experience.

AHI has created resources and materials that will provide your group with a testimonial video from Adama, our ministry partner and friend in Sierra Leone, who has lived with blindness her whole life, discussion questions for personalizing the experience, and everything else you will need (except the desserts, of course 😊) to help you raise awareness about disability through this event.

When you register, choose between two planning methods.

  1. For a small shipping fee, you can receive a Desserts in the Dark Kit, which includes a host gift or door prize, AHI favors for your event, eye masks to make it easier to simulate blindness, and access to the digital resources.

  2. Select the DIY method, which will provide you access to all the digital resources. You will need to provide your own blindfolds or eye masks for your event.

The goals of the event are:

  • Gain awareness about living with a disability through a personal video testimony and guided experience.

  • Demonstrates the need to reach people with disabilities with the wholistic Gospel.

  • Encourage people to consider steps they can take to engage more with people with disabilities in their own community and around the world.
