Handmade Paper, Cardstock, Fabric, Banana Leaf
These bookmarks are handcrafted by women with disabilities in Sierra Leone. The paper is handmade with indigenous grasses and the fabric designs come in various unique colors and patterns.
The Artist: Hawa
Hawa works incredibly hard despite the challenges of painful elephantiasis. Through Women of Hope, she has learned to make paper from indigenous grasses, while she also uses her backyard garden to help provide for her children.
Women of Hope has created a space for women with disabilities to work in a safe, clean, nurturing environment, offering them the opportunity to work together, building community and relationship. This ensures that the women are able to work independently toward their own sustainable future without our assistance.
To produce their creative works, the women work in small teams of two or three (known as guilds): sharing the work and the profit.
