Item details

fabric, beads, paper, fishing wire

These necklaces are handcrafted by women with disabilities in Sierra Leone and are made from paper beat into a pulp, molded and dried. Once the beads are dried, local fabric is hand-sewn over each bead and strung with wooden beads alongside it with a clasp. These necklaces look great alone, or layered with a second.

Because they are hand-made, each set will naturally have irregularities, both in color and length, to create a truly one of a kind piece.

The Artist: Mankapr

Mankapr is an active member of Women of Hope Sierra Leone, and known for her sense of humor and infectious smile. Mankapr developed Polio at a young age, leaving her mobility impaired. Through the program, she was trained as a Community Health Evangelist and now she uses the money she earns from her fair trade sales to help support her son and daughter.

Women of Hope has created a space for women with disabilities to work in a safe, clean, nurturing environment, offering them the opportunity to work together, building community and relationship. This ensures that the women are able to work independently toward their own sustainable future without our assistance.

To produce their creative works, the women work in small teams (known as guilds): sharing the work and the profit.
